To make sure you won’t be dealing with clogged drains or a broken garbage disposal while you have a house full of people, follow these tips.
- Don’t pour any fats or oils down the drain, since they will harden and clog your pipes. Instead, wipe grease out of dishes and pans with a paper towel before you wash them.
- Scrape any foods that swell up into the trash can. Just as rice and other grainy foods expand in your stomach and make you feel full, they also expand in pipes and cause a lot of backup.
- Don’t put turkey skins, fruit and vegetable peels, or anything else hard or fibrous into the garbage disposal, and make sure your disposal is running each time you put food into it.
