As a preventative, pour a cup of baking soda followed by a cup of white vinegar into each drain to make a foam formula that will eat away at any buildup inside your drains.
Egg Shells
Membranes inside of egg shells can form a web that captures other foods and liquids that go into your drain pipe. This can cause clogs, not to mention that the membrane lining can also wrap around the garbage disposal’s shredder and cause it to malfunction.
Any Bones
Bones are too hard for the garbage disposal to grind, so whether you’re having ham or turkey for Easter, don’t throw them in the garbage disposal. They will either break the blades or splinter and get lodged in your drain pipe.
Grease
Grease that bakes out of the ham should never be poured down the drain since it will cling to the pipe as it thickens. Instead, pour oil or grease into a coffee can or another dish and throw it away after it hardens.
Stringy Veggies
Celery and asparagus strings will wrap around the blades of the garbage disposal and slow it down, so throw leftovers in the trash.
Foods that Swell
Just as pasta and rice swell up in your stomach, they’ll do that in the drain pipe. So to avoid a clog, scrape them into the trash.
